Titled “Cat Jammies,” my thesis is a collection of several illustrations and images presented on playable trading cards. It is the idea of silly, cute, and ridiculously incoherent images featuring cats. The title is taken from an old phrase, ‘cat’s pajamas,’ synonymous with ‘the bee’s knees.’
The play style itself has specific inspirations in Yu-Gi-Oh!, the Pokémon trading card game, and Magic the Gathering. These games feature turn-based objective focused gameplay, which is emulated in “Cat Jammies.” The game is fast paced, fun, and engaging, where the players can use multiple cards of each type, each turn. The body of work features a variety of both unique and repeated card illustrations, a card backing design, layout of the cards themselves, a set of playmats, and an illustrated poster demonstrating the rules, finally combined with the interactivity of the game itself.
By asking what types of player fantasy people have when playing these card games, I then develop particular themes through which various other cards can exist under. Using these themes, I design and develop illustrations, which reflect the roles that these card effects have. For example, one such card theme demonstrates the bonuses that one can use in the game, and depicts gluttony while offering the player a boon, in the vein of overindulgence.
